Our Town

Described by playwright Edward Albee as “the greatest American play ever written”, Our Town presents the fictional American town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its citizens. The play moves from innocence to experience as the years pass. Expectation is followed by romance and tragedy as the play moves from playful storytelling to metaphysical contemplation.
Working alongside the Scenic Arts and Costume Production students, I developed a rehearsal room concept for our production to retain the minimalist style of Albee's original stage directions. Written in 1938 and set roughly 30 years prior, we wanted our production to evoke a similar nostalgia for an era which feels familiar yet past, whilst maintaining the original text. Character costumes were updated to a 1990s styling. Actors at foley tables around the raked disk created the noise of the mimed props and atmosphere live.
